The area that is now Ocean City was originally home to Indigenous peoples, including the Algonquian-speaking Assateague and Nanticoke peoples, for thousands of years before European colonization. In 1869, businessman Isaac Coffin built the first beach-front cottage to receive paying guests, marking the beginning of Ocean City's development as a resort destination. What had been called "The Ladies' Resort to the Ocean" before 1870 grew rapidly as prominent businessmen from surrounding regions invested in the area's potential.
