Plainfield is a town in Sullivan County, New Hampshire with a population of 2,459 according to the 2020 census. Originally settled by people from Plainfield, Connecticut, the town was incorporated in 1761 by colonial governor Benning Wentworth. The community includes the village of Plainfield, located along New Hampshire Route 12A in the western part of town, and the village of Meriden, home to Kimball Union Academy, a private preparatory school built in 1813.
The town is perhaps best known for its connection to the Cornish Art Colony, which flourished between 1885 and 1930. Prominent artist Maxfield Parrish purchased land near his parents' estate in 1898 and built his home, The Oaks, along with an elaborate studio. He remained in Plainfield for 67 years and painted the stage backdrop in the town hall. In 1910, Ernest Harold Baynes founded the Meriden Bird Club in Plainfield, establishing the first institution of its kind in the nation.
Plainfield encompasses 53 square miles and is bounded on the west by the Connecticut River. The town's highest point is Grantham Mountain at 2,660 feet.
