Cornish is a town in Sullivan County, New Hampshire with a population of 1,616 according to the 2020 census. The town was granted in 1763 and incorporated in 1765 by colonial governor Benning Wentworth, who named it for Sir Samuel Cornish, a distinguished admiral of the Royal Navy. The area once served as "Mast Camp," a shipping point for tall masts that English settlers floated down the river.
Beginning in the late nineteenth century, Cornish became a well-known summer retreat for artists and writers. Sculptor Augustus Saint-Gaudens arrived in 1885 seeking a studio away from New York City's summer heat, and his presence attracted other creative figures including painter and illustrator Maxfield Parrish, who built his estate called the Oaks in the area. This influx of artists established the popular Cornish Art Colony. The town was also home to reclusive author J. D. Salinger from the 1950s until his death in 2010.
Cornish is renowned for its covered bridges. The Cornish–Windsor Covered Bridge, built in 1866 at a cost of $9,000, spans the Connecticut River and remains the longest two-span covered bridge in the world. Until 2008, it held the distinction of being the longest covered bridge still standing in the United States. The town is also home to three additional covered bridges: the Blow-Me-Down, Dingleton Hill, and Kenyon bridges. Each August, Cornish hosts the Cornish Fair, a cherished community tradition.
