Phillips is a town in Franklin County, Maine, with a population of 898 according to the 2020 census. The area was granted by Massachusetts around 1790 to Jonathan Phillips of Boston, and first settled in 1791 by Perkins Allen, a sea captain from Martha's Vineyard who originally named the settlement Curvo. The town was officially incorporated on February 25, 1812, taking the name of its original grantee.
Throughout the nineteenth century, Phillips developed into a thriving industrial center. The town's productive soil made hay farming significant, while its superior water power attracted mills along the Sandy River, including sawmills, gristmills, a fulling mill, and a carding machine. Additional enterprises such as a starch factory, tannery, furniture factory, and boot and shoe factory contributed to the local economy. The region became particularly prosperous as the center for lumbering in the Rangeley Lake area. Originally, lumber was transported during winter months on sledges pulled by oxen across the snow, but this changed in 1879 when the narrow-gauge Sandy River Railroad opened to Farmington, connecting to the Maine Central Railroad for wider distribution. The line was reorganized as the Sandy River and Rangeley Lakes Railroad in 1891. Though the railroad ceased operations in 1935, a restored section now operates as a heritage railroad and museum, preserving Phillips's transportation history for visitors today.
