Eustis is a town in Franklin County, Maine, with a population of 641 according to the 2020 census. The town, which includes the village of Stratton, has become known as a popular recreation area. It covers a total area of 41.48 square miles and is drained by the Dead River.
The area holds significant historical importance. Benedict Arnold and his troops passed through on October 19, 1775, traveling up the North Branch of the Dead River on their way to the Battle of Quebec. The town's early settlement began with Caleb Stevens from New Hampshire, who arrived with his wife and nine children as the original settler. Around 1831, Charles L. Eustis of Lewiston purchased the northern half of the township from Maine and built both a sawmill and gristmill that same year. The township was initially organized as Hanover Plantation in 1840 and later became part of Jackson Plantation around 1850. On March 30, 1857, it was set off and organized as Eustis Plantation, named after its early proprietor. The town was officially incorporated on February 18, 1871, with a population of 342 at that time.
Eustis experiences a humid continental climate characterized by warm, often humid summers and cold winters with sometimes severe conditions. The town offers visitors and residents several sites of interest, including Bigelow Preserve, Flagstaff Lake, and the Dead River Area Historical Society.
