New Hampton is a town in Belknap County, New Hampshire with a population of 2,377 as of the 2020 census. Originally granted in 1765 by colonial Governor Benning Wentworth under the name "Moultonborough Addition," the town was renamed New Hampton in 1777 when it was incorporated by Jonathan Moulton, a former colonel and town moderator who had been born in Hampton.
The town has developed into a winter sports resort area and is home to several notable institutions. The New Hampton School, a private preparatory school founded in 1821 as a Free Will Baptist institution, has educated generations of students. From 1854 to 1870, the school was affiliated with Cobb Divinity School, which later became part of Bates College. In 1920, New Hampton became home to the state's oldest fish hatchery, the New Hampton Fish Hatchery.
Geographically, New Hampton spans 38.4 square miles and is notable for containing the geographic center of New Hampshire, located in its eastern portion between Winona Lake and Jackson Pond. The town features several lakes and water features, including Pemigewasset Lake at its center and is bounded by the Pemigewasset River to the west and southwest. The landscape is also home to George Duncan State Forest. Interstate 93 and state routes 104 and 132 provide access to the town, connecting it to surrounding communities like Plymouth, Concord, Bristol, and Meredith.
