Meredith is a town in Belknap County situated in New Hampshire's Lakes Region and home to a 2020 population of 6,662. Originally chartered in 1748 as Palmer's Town in honor of surveying teacher Samuel Palmer, the town was renamed New Salem and later Meredith, the latter name chosen when Governor John Wentworth regranted the town in 1768, honoring Sir William Meredith, 3rd Baronet, a member of Parliament who opposed colonial taxation. Settlement began in earnest in 1766 under Jacob Eaton and Colonel Ebenezer Smith. Early settlers farmed corn, wheat, rye, and potatoes, though the region became particularly noted for apple orchards. The construction of a 600-foot rock-lined canal between 1816 and 1818 by landowner John Bond Swasey harnessed waterpower from Lake Waukewan, enabling the operation of sawmills, gristmills, and cotton mills. By the nineteenth century, Meredith Village had become a thriving commercial center with various trades and industries. Railroad connection in March 1849 and steamboat service from nearby Alton Bay transformed Meredith into a popular summer resort destination. The famous SS Mount Washington, launched in 1872, brought passengers to the town's shores. Today, Meredith remains a major resort town situated along Lake Winnipesaukee and bordered by several other significant lakes. The town is home to the Stonedam Island Natural Area, the Winnipesaukee Scenic Railroad, and serves as one of the ports of call for the MS Mount Washington.
