Napoleonville is a village and the parish seat of Assumption Parish in Louisiana, with a population of 540 residents according to the 2020 census. The community has deep historical roots extending back to the early nineteenth century, when it was originally known as Canal, named after a man-made waterway that connected the settlement westward to Lake Verret and served as a vital transportation route for goods and people. The village received its present name from Pierre Charlet, a former French soldier who had served under Napoleon Bonaparte and settled in Assumption Parish after the Napoleonic Wars. Napoleonville became the parish seat when Assumption Parish was created on March 31, 1807, and the town was officially incorporated on March 11, 1878. The area's first permanent European settlements were established by French and Spanish colonists during the mid-eighteenth century along Bayou Lafourche, and the population grew substantially between 1755 and 1785 as Acadians arrived and cleared land following their exile. Throughout the nineteenth century, Napoleonville developed as a commercial and cultural center, with sugarcane cultivation becoming the dominant economic activity by the 1860s and remaining important today. The town also became a hub for French-language journalism through the Pionnier de l'Assomption newspaper, founded in 1850. Today, Napoleonville is perhaps best known as the filming location for the motion picture Because of Winn-Dixie, adapted from Kate DiCamillo's Newbery Prize-winning novel.
