Murray is an unincorporated community in Shoshone County, Idaho, nestled in the Coeur d'Alene Mountains approximately twenty miles north of Wallace. Prichard Creek flows through the area, carving a thin and deep valley into the surrounding landscape. The community takes its name from George Murray, a mining prospector who helped establish what became one of several boisterous mining camps that sprang up across northern Idaho in the late 1880s. Mining operations sustained the area for decades, from the 1880s through the 1950s. The town's early years saw considerable activity, with a post office established in 1884 and a population estimated at around 500 by 1909. The Idaho Northern Railroad arrived in 1908 to serve the community, though the line was taken over by the Oregon–Washington Railroad and Navigation Company in 1911 and eventually abandoned following the devastating 1933 flood. Murray's fortunes declined over time, with the population dropping to about 100 by 1960. Today, the community is home to just around 25 residents. Two businesses continue to operate: the Sprag Pole Restaurant and Museum, which occupies one of the town's original buildings from 1884, and the Bedroom Goldmine Bar. The area has yielded unexpected treasures in recent times, with many gold nuggets discovered during road reconstruction over dredge spoils in 1997 and 1998, echoing the mining heritage that shaped Murray's identity.
