Kellogg is a city in the Silver Valley of Shoshone County, Idaho, located in the Idaho Panhandle about 36 miles east-southeast of Coeur d'Alene along Interstate 90. Named after prospector Noah Kellogg, the city was incorporated in 1907 and became a center of silver mining operations. For nearly a century, mines including the famous Bunker Hill produced vast quantities of silver, though the work was marked by disputes between miners and owners over wages and safety conditions. When the Bunker Hill Mine and smelter closed in 1981, thousands lost their jobs, and mining operations left a legacy of lead contamination in the region's water and soil. The Sunshine Mine, site of a devastating 1972 fire that killed 91 miners, remained operational until 2001, ultimately producing 360 million troy ounces of silver.
Since mining's decline, Kellogg has reinvented itself as a resort destination. A 3.1-mile gondola completed by 1990 connects the city to an alpine ski lodge at 5,700 feet on Kellogg Mountain. The Silver Mountain Resort, accessed by the world's longest single-cabin gondola and featuring peaks at 6,297 and 6,200 feet, now anchors the local economy. The transformation includes hotels, restaurants, shops, a water park, and a golf course. The New York Times featured Kellogg in its travel section in 2008 as an up-and-coming resort town.
