Monroe is a small city in Benton County, Oregon, located along Highway 99W midway between Eugene and Corvallis. According to 2023 census estimates, it has a population of 763 residents. The city originated from a sawmill established by Joseph White in 1852, which grew into a settlement called White's Mill by 1853. Around the same time, Roland Hinton founded the nearby town of Starr Point to the north. These two communities merged in 1857 to form Monroe, which soon became an important hub for paddle boat traffic along regional waterways. During its early history, Monroe was one of the largest cities in Oregon, though its prominence diminished significantly after the construction of Interstate 5 in the 1960s. The community transformed into a rural farming area following this highway development. Monroe High School was constructed in the 1920s, serving the local population.
