Moira is a town located on the western border of Franklin County, New York, situated west of Malone. Named for the Earl of Moira, the town was formally established in 1828, having been formed from the town of Dickinson. Settlement in the area began around 1803. According to the 2010 census, Moira had a population of 2,934 residents.
The town's development was significantly shaped by railroad expansion in the nineteenth century. The Ogdensburg and Lake Champlain Railroad, originally founded in 1849 as the Northern Railroad, ran from Ogdensburg through Moira to Rouses Point. In 1883, the Northern Adirondack Railroad was constructed from Moira south to St. Regis Falls, a major lumbering center. The railroad was extended southward to Santa Clara in 1885 and eventually reached Tupper Lake by 1890, further connecting the region to broader commercial networks.
Today, Moira spans 45.2 square miles and is traversed by U.S. Route 11, an east-west highway that intersects with New York State Route 95 at the hamlet of Moira. The town's western boundary marks the border with St. Lawrence County.
