Constable is a town in Franklin County in northern New York, situated along the Canada-United States border north of Malone. The town was founded in 1807 from part of Malone and was named after William Constable, a member of the original land owners' syndicate. As the town grew, portions of its territory were used to establish other communities, including Fort Covington in 1817 and Westville in 1829. The town's location on the border created unique economic opportunities in its early days, particularly through the operation of "line stores," which were constructed so that part of the shop sat in Canada and the other end in the United States, allowing merchants to shift merchandise across the border while avoiding customs duties.
The population of Constable was 1,566 residents at the 2010 census. The town encompasses 32.8 square miles and is bordered to the north by Quebec. New York State Route 122 runs east-west through the town, while New York State Route 30 intersects it at Constable village and continues south to Malone. In June 2015, Constable received national attention during a three-week manhunt for two escaped convicts from Clinton Correctional Facility. One escapee was killed in nearby Malone, while the other was captured in Constable just two miles from the Canadian border on June 28.
