At an elevation of 1,755 feet, Mereta serves a small population, with the 2000 census recording 138 residents in its ZIP code area. The community's name comes from twin sisters, Meta and Reta, who lived in the area around 1902, with the local postmaster choosing to honor them through the community's designation.
