Mayodan is a town in Rockingham County, North Carolina, with a population of 2,418 as of the 2020 census. The town takes its name from two rivers that converge nearby, the Mayo and the Dan. According to Ripley's Believe It or Not!, Mayodan is the only town in the world with this name. The town began as a mill community when a cotton mill was constructed in 1892, with operations commencing in April 1896. The Washington Mills-Mayodan Plant, later operated as Tultex, became an important part of the town's industrial heritage until its closure in 1999. The plant was recognized on the National Register of Historic Places in 2005, and the Mayodan Historic District joined the register in 2016.
Today, Mayodan continues as a manufacturing center, hosting facilities for Sturm, Ruger & Co. and Bridgestone Aircraft Tire. General Tobacco once operated in the town until its closure in 2010. Located near the confluence of the Mayo and Dan Rivers, Mayodan covers approximately 1.5 square miles. The town is served by Western Rockingham Middle School and Dalton L. McMichael High School.
