Lakeview, the county seat of Lake County, Oregon, sits at an elevation of 4,757 feet above sea level in the Goose Lake Valley at the foot of the Warner Mountains. With a population of 2,418 at the 2020 census, the city bills itself as the "Tallest Town in Oregon." The community faced significant hardship on May 22, 1900, when a fire destroyed 64 buildings, though the town rebuilt rapidly with support from local leader Bernard Daly. The arrival of a narrow-gauge railway in 1911 sparked economic growth, particularly in lumber production, with seven sawmills operating by 1940. Today, Lakeview's economy is based on agriculture, lumber production, government activities, and an increasingly important tourism sector, with Oregon's Outback Scenic Byway passing through the city.
