Lake Hopatcong is a census-designated place located in Jefferson Township in Morris County, New Jersey, encompassing communities on the northeast side of the state's largest freshwater lake. As of the 2020 census, the area had a population of 10,232 residents with a median age of 44.4 years. The CDP covers 9.39 square miles, with lakefront communities including Espanong, Prospect Point, Raccoon Island, Halsey Island, Woodport, and Brady Cove, alongside inland areas such as Hurdtown and Berkshire Valley. New Jersey Route 15 runs through the eastern side, providing convenient access south to Interstate 80 and north toward Sparta. A notable feature is Liffy Island, formed when the Morris Canal raised water levels by twelve to fourteen feet, detaching the land from the mainland. The Brady Brothers originally owned the island in the nineteenth century, and it later served as Scout Island for the Boy Scouts program beginning in 1922. Jefferson Township purchased the island in the 1990s and established it as the Liffy Island Wildlife Preserve, now accessible via trails from Prospect Point Road. The community first appeared in the 1960 census under the name Esponong before being formally designated as Lake Hopatcong in 2020. The area's economy and character reflect its residential orientation, with over ninety-six percent of residents living in urban areas within the CDP boundaries.
