Kenvil is an unincorporated community and census-designated place located within Roxbury Township in Morris County, New Jersey. As of the 2020 census, the community had a population of 1,806. The area was originally known as McCainsville before taking on its current name.
The region's most significant historical landmark is its connection to the powder industry. In 1872, the Atlantic Giant Powder Company established the second dynamite plant in the United States in Kenvil. When the Hercules Powder Company acquired the facility in 1913, operations expanded to include smokeless powder manufacturing. The plant's history was marked by tragedy, with major explosions occurring in 1934 that killed six people, in 1940 that claimed 51 lives, and in 1989 that caused damage across the town.
Geographically, Kenvil occupies the eastern portion of Roxbury Township in west-central Morris County, bordered by the unincorporated community of Succasunna to the southwest and Mine Hill Township to the southeast. U.S. Route 46 runs through the center of the community, providing access to Dover three miles to the east and Netcong five miles to the west. The area encompasses 1.353 square miles and features several small lakes, including Marine Lake and a portion of Sunset Lake. The Lamington River flows through the community, part of the larger Raritan River watershed.
