La Pine is a city in Deschutes County in Central Oregon that was incorporated on December 7, 2006. Located about 30 miles southwest of Bend along U.S. Highway 97, the community sits in an isolated area as a loose collection of homes and businesses with several prominent Cascade Range peaks visible from town. According to the 2020 Census, La Pine had a population of 2,512 residents.
The area's first European-American settlement came in the 1800s through French fur trappers. Originally called Rosland, the community was founded in the nineteenth century with a post office established in 1897 and a townsite platted in 1900. The arrival of the Oregon Trunk Railroad in the early 1900s, built by the Spokane, Portland and Seattle Railway, connected the region to Bend, with the line later becoming part of BNSF Railway. The completion of U.S. Route 97 in 1917 further developed the area's transportation network. La Pine remained unincorporated for many years until voters approved an incorporation measure in 2006, making it a city occupying seven square miles.
Situated in the valley of the Little Deschutes River, a tributary of the Deschutes River, La Pine offers recreational opportunities including fishing, swimming, and canoeing. The city operates under a council-manager form of government and is part of the Bend Metropolitan Statistical Area. A branch of the Deschutes Public Library was built in the community in 2000, providing residents access to library services.
