Kneeland, formerly known as Kneeland Prairie, is an unincorporated community in Humboldt County situated about twelve miles east of Humboldt Bay and roughly equidistant from both Eureka and Arcata. Located at an elevation of 2,129 feet, the community experiences a warm-summer Mediterranean climate with cool, rainy winters. Light snowfall occurs several times yearly due to its higher elevation, distinguishing it from lower elevations in the county where snow is rare.
Before European settlement, the Wiyot people inhabited the region, harvesting salmon, roots, and lamprey from the Eel River. They may have used controlled fire to maintain the prairies for hunting. The area was originally called Kleizer's Prairie until 1852, when John A. Kneeland and his sister Mandala established a ranch, giving the area its current name. White settlement accelerated after the California Gold Rush brought newcomers to supply inland miners. Conflicts with Indigenous peoples led to the establishment of Army stations Camp Lyon and Camp Iaqua in the 1860s. Early settlers gradually consolidated their holdings into large ranches operated by prominent local families by the turn of the century.
The Kneeland post office operated from 1880 to 1891 and again from 1892 until 2011. Kneeland Airport opened in September 1964 as a non-towered facility providing emergency landing capability and serving as a helitack base for Cal Fire. Today, Kneeland remains a rural community centered around its elementary school, airport, and firehouse, with logging continuing in surrounding timberlands. The Kneeland Elementary School, built in 1880 and serving grades K through 8, is one of California's smallest public schools.
