Kentwood is a city in Kent County, Michigan, with a population of 54,304 according to the 2020 census. Located just southeast of Grand Rapids, it ranks as the third most-populated municipality in the Grand Rapids metropolitan area. The city was incorporated in 1967, formed from what remained of Paris Township as a way to prevent further annexation of land by the adjacent cities of Grand Rapids and Wyoming. This incorporation came after two previous unsuccessful attempts to establish the city.
The name Kentwood was chosen by first Mayor Peter M. Lamberts, who served for twelve years beginning in 1967. Rather than adopting the name Paris, which risked confusion with another unincorporated community in the state's center, or Plaster Creek, named after the area's largest waterway, the city took its name from the Kentwood Public Schools, the largest public school system in the region. Kent County itself was named after jurist James Kent. The city covers a total area of 20.95 square miles and is bordered by Wyoming to the west, Grand Rapids and Grand Rapids Township to the north, Cascade Township to the east, and Gaines Township to the south. Major highways including I-96, M-11, M-37, and M-6 pass through or near the city, connecting it to surrounding communities and Gerald R. Ford International Airport.
