Helmetta is a small borough in Middlesex County, New Jersey, located in the heart of the Raritan Valley region where Manalapan Brook, a tributary of the Raritan River, flows through the community. The borough was established around a snuff mill opened in the 1820s and acquired by George Washington Helme in the 1880s. Helmetta was officially formed as a borough on March 20, 1888, created from portions of East Brunswick following a referendum held on March 10, 1888. The community took its name from Helme's daughter, Olivia Antoinette "Etta" Helme.
The G.W. Helme Snuff Mill became Helmetta's defining landmark and economic center. By 1925, the mill had grown to become the largest snuff mill in the world, and by 1934 it employed four hundred people. The mill changed ownership several times over the decades before operations relocated to Wheeling, West Virginia in 1993. In 2012, Kaplan Companies purchased the facility and transformed it into an apartment complex, completing the conversion by 2017. The G.W. Helme Snuff Mill Historic District, which includes the mill, employee housing, accessory buildings, two churches, and Helmetta Pond, was recognized on the New Jersey Register of Historic Places in 1980 and the National Register of Historic Places that same year.
Helmetta's population has grown steadily in recent decades. The 2020 census counted 2,455 residents, the borough's highest decennial count ever, representing growth from 2,178 in 2010 and 1,825 in 2000.
