Gresham is a city in Oregon's Willamette Valley, located in Multnomah County and bordered by Portland to the northwest. First settled in 1851 by brothers Jackson and James Powell under the Donation Land Claim Act, the area was originally called Powell's Valley. The city took its current name from a post office established in 1884, named after Walter Quintin Gresham, an American Civil War general and United States Secretary of State. Gresham was officially incorporated in 1905, with a population of just 365 residents at that time. Lewis Shattuck, a member of a pioneer family, served as the city's first mayor.
The early economy was driven primarily by agriculture, with farmers cultivating berries, particularly raspberries, grapes, and vegetables from the 1910s through the 1960s. The city experienced significant growth during the mid-twentieth century, expanding from 4,000 residents in 1960 to more than 10,000 by 1970. According to the 2020 census, Gresham's population reached 114,247, making it the second most populous city in Multnomah County and the fourth-most populous in Oregon. Today, Gresham serves as an important economic center for eastern Multnomah County. Notable early institutions include the Gresham Branch Public Library, established in 1913 with support from the Andrew Carnegie library fund, and Gresham General Hospital, which opened in 1959.
