Corbett is an unincorporated town nestled on the Columbia River in eastern Multnomah County, Oregon, situated between the Sandy River and Crown Point along the Historic Columbia River Highway. The town carries the name of Henry W. Corbett, a prominent Oregon pioneer and senator who purchased a farm called The Highlands in the area in 1885. Perched high on a bluff in the Columbia River Gorge, the property offered panoramic views of the river below and served as Corbett's summer retreat. The location holds deep historical significance, as the river waters below were first charted by one of Captain George Vancouver's ships in 1792, and the bluff itself was later seen by Lewis and Clark during their overland journey in 1802. Around 1812, David Thompson mapped the wilderness in this region for the Hudson's Bay Company. The farm was accessible by rail car from the Oregon Railway and Navigation Company, of which Corbett was the major stockholder. The OR&N track had been completed through the gorge by 1882, decades before the Historic Columbia River Highway was constructed between 1913 and 1922. A station already existed at the Corbett stop before the town itself was formally established and named after the senator. The post office in the area was officially designated "Corbett" in 1895. Today, the Corbett School District operates both the Corbett School and Corbett Charter School, serving the community.
