Galien, pronounced guh-LEEN, is a small village in Berrien County, Michigan, with a population of 513 according to the 2020 census. Located within Galien Township and straddling U.S. Highway 12, the village sits in the Galien River basin just west and south of the main stem. The village was founded by George A. Blakeslee, a Pennsylvania native who arrived in Galien Township in 1853. Blakeslee platted the village in 1861 and it was incorporated in 1879. The location proved advantageous due to the Michigan Central Railroad, completed in 1849, which connected New Buffalo to Detroit and ran through the village. Blakeslee established a sawmill and general store at the site, and purchased several thousand acres in the area to harvest timber for his sawmill operation. For many years after Galien's establishment, Blakeslee served as village president, postmaster, justice of the peace, and school board member, eventually becoming World Bishop of the Latter Day Saint's Church. Blakeslee Street, located in the southeast quadrant of the city plat, was named in his honor. The village experienced significant challenges in 1971 when two major fires struck the business district. A fire on July 21 destroyed a hardware store, restaurant, and beauty salon, while another fire on October 18 extensively damaged a nearby IGA supermarket, together destroying much of the northeast corner of the business district in that single year.
