Benton Harbor is a city in Berrien County, Michigan, located 46 miles southwest of Kalamazoo. According to the 2020 census, it has a population of 9,103 and is the smaller of two principal cities in the Niles–Benton Harbor Metropolitan Statistical Area. Across the St. Joseph River lies the city of St. Joseph, and together they are known as the Twin Cities. More than eighty percent of Benton Harbor's population is African American.
Founded in 1860 by Henry C. Morton, Sterne Brunson, and Charles Hull, the settlement was originally named Brunson Harbor. The city's name changed to Benton Harbor in 1866 to honor Thomas Hart Benton, a Missouri Senator who helped Michigan achieve statehood. The three founders were instrumental in building a canal through the surrounding wetlands and the Paw Paw River, completed in 1862. Originally twenty-five feet wide and later expanded to fifty feet, the canal transformed Benton Harbor into a shipping and manufacturing center for the region, though it became non-navigable in sections by the mid-twentieth century. The city was officially incorporated in 1891.
Benton Harbor has faced significant challenges in recent decades. Retail businesses began relocating outside the city starting in the 1950s, leading to economic decline between 1970 and 1985. The city experienced major civil unrest in 1966 and 2003, along with smaller riots in other years.
