Elkhorn is a city in Walworth County, Wisconsin, located 40 miles southwest of Milwaukee and serving as the county seat. The city's name traces back to 1836, when Colonel Samuel Phoenix spotted a rack of elk antlers in a tree and declared the area "Elk Horn." The community took root through the efforts of Daniel Bradley, his brother Milo, and LeGrand Rockwell, who recognized the region's natural beauty and fertile soil. By 1846, when the first town meeting was held with a population of 539, Elkhorn had been designated the county seat due to its central location within Walworth County.
Throughout its history, Elkhorn has developed distinctive character and traditions. In 1851, the city became home to the Walworth County Fair, now the largest county fair in Wisconsin, held annually for six days with Labor Day as its closing day. During the 1870s, the saline springs found in the area drew visitors seeking relief from rheumatism. Since before World War II, Elkhorn has earned the affectionate nickname "Christmas Card Town" for its tradition of decorating its center for the holidays, a custom celebrated annually through oil paintings by local artist Jan Castle Reed that are transformed into Christmas cards. The city has also gained wider recognition through the folklore of the Beast of Bray Road, a cryptid creature that has inspired books, documentaries, and a 2005 film. As of the 2020 census, Elkhorn was home to 10,247 residents.
