East Rochester is a neighborhood within the city of Rochester, New Hampshire, situated on the banks of the Salmon Falls River, which forms the border between New Hampshire and Maine. Located three miles east of Rochester proper, this community is home to approximately 3,600 residents and represents one of two villages within city limits, alongside Gonic.
The area began as a farming community before transforming during the Industrial Revolution into a small textile and shoe manufacturing center. The Salmon Falls River, called Newichawannock by the Abenaki people—meaning "river with many falls"—provided the water power necessary for industrial development. Two mills operated here: the Cocheco Woolen Manufacturing Company and the smaller White Mill, built upstream. Between the 1880s and 1920s, the area, known locally as "Eastside," experienced significant growth. The Nashua & Rochester Railroad, which later became part of the Boston & Maine Railroad, served the community, with a depot called "Rindgemere" located on Autumn Street.
The Great Depression brought decline to the mills, which eventually closed in the 1970s. This loss of principal employers diminished the community's quality of life for some time. Recently, however, East Rochester has experienced a rebirth. Its location near major routes and industrial centers, combined with its small village character, has attracted new residents. Several beautiful Victorian buildings have been restored, and the area benefits from nearby business activity across the border in Lebanon, Maine. Today, East Rochester maintains its own ZIP code (03868) and features a main street with shops, churches, a library, and a museum housed in the former fire station.
