Dunn is the most populous city in Harnett County, North Carolina, with a population of 8,446 according to the 2020 census. The city sits in eastern Harnett County and serves as part of the Anderson Creek Micropolitan Statistical Area, which connects to the larger Raleigh-Durham-Cary region.
Originally known as Lucknow, the settlement that became Dunn experienced significant growth following the Battle of Averasborough in 1865, when residents from the larger riverside city of Averasborough relocated there. The town was renamed Dunn in 1873 to honor Bennett Dunn, who supervised construction of the railway line connecting Wilson and Fayetteville. The city was formally incorporated on February 12, 1887, at a time when it functioned as both a logging town and a turpentine distilling center.
Dunn's location makes it accessible by major transportation routes. U.S. Route 301 passes through the city's center, connecting to Benson to the northeast and Fayetteville to the southwest. U.S. Route 421 also crosses through downtown, leading to Lillington, the county seat, and Clinton. Interstate 95 runs along the eastern side of the city with nearby exits.
