Dunlap is a small city located in Morris County, Kansas, with a population of 27 as of the 2020 census. The town was founded in 1869 by Joseph Gage Dunlap, an Indian agent representing the Kanza tribe, after that tribe had migrated to Oklahoma. A post office was established in the area on March 19, 1874, initially as Hillsborough before being reestablished as Dunlap just one month later on April 20.
The community experienced significant growth beginning in 1878 when Benjamin "Pap" Singleton arrived and established Singleton's Colony, which attracted approximately two hundred Black families to the area. These settlers, known as Exodusters, came to Kansas between 1877 and 1879 seeking opportunity and freedom. To support this growing community, the Presbyterian church founded Freedmen's Academy in 1880, providing educational opportunities for African Americans. The town also established Dunlap Colored Cemetery in 1880, which now contains over one hundred graves and was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2018 for its association with the Exoduster Movement and Pap Singleton.
The twentieth century brought challenges. The 1930s Dust Bowl, caused by poor farming techniques and resulting in severe dust storms, made crop cultivation difficult and contributed to the town's decline. The post office closed in 1988, and Dunlap became known as one of Kansas's many ghost towns. Today, the community is home to roughly thirty people, a dramatic change from its prosperous past.
