Burdick is an unincorporated community and census-designated place in Morris County, Kansas, located approximately six miles east of Lost Springs. According to the 2020 census, the population was 62 residents. The area has deep historical roots, beginning with centuries of habitation by Native Americans on the Great Plains. The region passed through French and Spanish control before becoming part of the United States through the 1803 Louisiana Purchase. The Santa Fe Trail, one of the nation's most significant land routes from the 1820s to 1870s, ran about three miles north of present-day Burdick, and in 1863 Charles Atkinson witnessed a raid by Cheyenne Indians on the Six Mile Stage Station located there.
The modern community traces its origins to 1880, when Swedish immigrants from Illinois established a settlement called Linsdale. In 1887, the town was renamed Burdick in honor of Miss Burdick, sweetheart of a Santa Fe Railroad official. That same year, a post office was established and the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway completed a branch line connecting Burdick to neighboring communities. The railroad, now known as BNSF Railway following a 1996 merger, remains central to local identity, though portions of the line were discontinued in 2006. Today, Burdick is served by Centre USD 397 school district and maintains an active post office with ZIP code 66838.
