Drayden is an unincorporated community in Saint Marys County, Maryland, with a notable history reflected in its historic properties and educational legacy. Two significant structures in the area earned recognition on the National Register of Historic Places: West St. Mary's Manor, listed in 1970, and Porto Bello, listed in 1972.
The Drayden Schoolhouse stands as a particularly important landmark in the community's past. This small, one-room structure served African American children from grades one through seven, operating continuously from 1890 to 1944. The land was generously donated by Mary Ellen and Daniel A. Gross in 1889, enabling the school's establishment. Built in the Victorian style common to other one-room schools throughout Saint Marys County at that time, the schoolhouse originally featured green paint on its interior, which remains visible today. The exterior received a fresh coat of paint in 2000 to help preserve the original sliding planks.
The Drayden Schoolhouse was one of three schools for African American children located in the Valley Lee District. A single teacher managed all seven grades within the one room, sometimes instructing as many as forty students at once. During this era, African American students had limited educational opportunities. No public high schools served African American students until 1934, meaning most African American children could not continue their education beyond seventh grade. Saint Marys County's schools remained segregated until 1967, marking a significant turning point in the county's educational history.
