David is an unincorporated coal town in Floyd County, Kentucky, located in the Appalachian Mountains approximately one hundred miles southeast of Lexington. With a population of 435 recorded in the 2000 U.S. Census, this community bears the ZIP code 41616 and sits along Kentucky Route 404.
The town takes its name from David L. Francis, president of Princess Elkhorn Coal Company, which originally built and owned the community. In its early years, David stood out as a model coal town, offering amenities uncommon to the region at that time, including a swimming pool, central water and sewer systems, and cable television service. The company also nurtured a children's choir that gained recognition through national tours. When Princess-Elkhorn sold the community in the late 1960s, however, these facilities deteriorated, and the housing stock declined from over one hundred units to slightly more than thirty.
The community demonstrated resilience in the face of hardship. Following a hepatitis outbreak, residents rallied together and ultimately purchased the entire village from its investor owner. They established the David Community Development Corporation, which successfully secured funding for essential infrastructure and improvements including a new water and sewer system, a fire station, a community park, and several dozen new homes.
