A Little About Crooked River Ranch

The Story of Crooked River Ranch, OR

The Crooked River, known to Northern Paiute peoples as udɨ huudɨ, or "deep canyon creek," is a 125-mile tributary of the Deschutes River in Oregon. The river forms near Paulina in Crook County where the South Fork Crooked River meets Beaver Creek, then flows westward across the high desert landscape. Along its course, the Crooked River passes through dramatic terrain between the Ochoco Mountains to the north and the Maury Mountains to the south, flowing past Post, the geographic center of Oregon, before entering Prineville Reservoir. The river eventually joins Lake Billy Chinook, an impoundment created by Round Butte Dam on the Deschutes River.

Before European settlement, the Crooked River and its tributaries supported thriving populations of anadromous fish including spring Chinook salmon, steelhead trout, and Pacific lamprey, along with native redband trout and bull trout. The river's floodplain was once described by early explorers as expansive and lush with waist-high grasses and willows, and beaver were abundant throughout the watershed. However, fish populations declined beginning in the early nineteenth century due to irrigation withdrawals, and the construction of dams—the Cove Power Plant around 1910, Ochoco Dam in 1920, and Round Butte Dam in the 1950s—blocked fish migration and access to historic spawning grounds. Today, a scenic 17.8-mile stretch of the river is protected as part of the National Wild and Scenic Rivers System.
