Crete is the most populous city in Saline County, Nebraska, with a population of 7,099 according to the 2020 census. The city's origins trace back to 1870, when the railroad first reached the area, spurring settlement and growth. Two competing communities merged in 1871 to form the modern town, which was named after Crete, Illinois, the former home of an early settler. The name also fit into an alphabetical naming scheme created by the Chicago, Burlington & Quincy Railroad line traveling westward from Lincoln, with towns spaced approximately nine miles apart to provide regular water stops for steam engines. Today, Crete is home to Doane University and continues to serve as an important community in the county. The city occupies 2.97 square miles and has a median age of 30.5 years. A significant historical event occurred on February 18, 1969, when a railroad accident released anhydrous ammonia fumes from a ruptured tank car, killing eight people and seriously injuring eleven others. The incident remains a notable part of Crete's history.
