Cimarron is a village in Colfax County, New Mexico, situated on the eastern slopes of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains along the Cimarron River. With a population of 792 at the 2020 census, it is the fourth most populous municipality in the county. The village lies along U.S. Route 64 and is surrounded by ranches, including the renowned Philmont Scout Ranch, located just four miles south, which serves as a high-adventure base operated by Scouting America. The area also encompasses wildlife areas, state forests, and state parks.
Cimarron's history is rooted in the Maxwell Land Grant, a vast 1.7 million-acre tract. Lucien B. Maxwell, a fur trapper, married into the Beaubien family in 1842 and eventually built a mansion on the future town site in 1858. He also constructed the Aztec Mill in 1864, now preserved as the Old Mill Museum. The village was officially chartered in 1859 and named for the Spanish word meaning "wild" or "unbroken," referring to a mustang. It served as the county seat from 1872 until 1881, when the seat moved to Springer after the arrival of the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway.
In the early twentieth century, railroads connected Cimarron to surrounding areas, supporting coal and timber industries. The village is notable for pioneering the four-day school week in the early 1970s and was home to the 1979 New Mexico High School Boys Basketball State Championship team. Today, Cimarron continues to thrive through tourism and its proximity to Philmont Scout Ranch.
