Canton is a small city in Fillmore County, Minnesota, with a population of 310 as of the 2020 census. The community traces its roots to 1882, when a post office was established under the name Canton, inspired by Canton, Ohio. The city was officially incorporated five years later in 1887. Once a stop on the passenger rail network, Canton station served the community during an earlier era of transportation.
Today, Canton occupies one square mile of land and sits along U.S. Highway 52 and Fillmore County Road 21, also known as Main Street. The city's location places it five miles east-southeast of Harmony and nine miles west of Mabel, making it part of the region's network of small towns. Education in the area is served by Mabel-Canton Public Schools, which formed when the original Canton School consolidated with Mabel in 1966. The Canton School, which had operated since at least 1914 when its first class graduated, was known for its blue and gold school colors before the merger. Despite its small size, Canton remains an established community with deep historical roots in southeastern Minnesota.
