Bromide is a small town straddling the line between Coal and Johnston counties in northeastern Oklahoma, with a 2020 population of 123. The town's name reflects the high bromide content of the mineral springs that first drew attention to the area. Long before European settlement, the Chickasaw Nation recognized the medicinal value of these springs, calling them Oka-Alichi or Hopi Kuli and believing the waters could treat rheumatism, stomach ailments, and various other conditions.
Judge William H. Jackson, a former superintendent of nearby Wapanucka Academy, founded Bromide as a tourist destination in the early 1900s. The community initially went by the names Juanita and Zenobia, honoring two of Jackson's daughters, before settling on Bromide in 1907 and incorporating in July 1908. The arrival of the Missouri, Oklahoma and Gulf Railway in 1911 sparked economic growth centered on limestone quarrying, with businessman Robert Galbreath Jr. establishing the first major quarry and building a three-story hotel from local stone. The railroad promoted Bromide as a premier health resort, supporting three additional hotels, a bathhouse, and swimming pool. By 1920, the population had grown to 520.
The discovery of manganese ore nearby offered another economic opportunity, though limited ore quality prevented large-scale development. The Great Depression ended both the tourist trade and manganese prospects, causing the population to decline steadily through the twentieth century. Today, Bromide remains a quiet rural community, a modest reminder of earlier ambitions built on the region's natural resources.
