Blanchardville is a village straddling Lafayette and Iowa counties in southwestern Wisconsin, about thirty miles from Madison. With a population of 807 at the 2020 census, the community has deep historical roots dating to the early 1840s, when members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, specifically the Strangite faction, settled the area and named it Zarahemla. These Mormon pioneers mined lead ore, farmed the land, and built the village's first mill in 1840. The character of Blanchardville changed in 1856 when Alvin Blanchard arrived from near Dodgeville and purchased the mill along the Pecatonica River from the departing Mormon settlers. Working with Cyrus Newkirk, Blanchard platted the village in 1857 and established its post office the following year. The community attracted settlers from many backgrounds. Yankee residents founded a Methodist church in 1852, while Norwegian Lutherans shared the building from 1864 until constructing their own church in 1892. The village's most prominent ethnic group became Norwegian, reflecting its position between the large historic Norwegian settlements of Blue Mounds and Wiota. Irish, Swiss, and German settlers also made their homes here, and a Catholic church was built in 1898. Today, Blanchardville sits on the East Branch Pecatonica River and is served by Wisconsin Highway 78 and routes F and H. The nearby Yellowstone Lake State Park offers recreational opportunities for residents and visitors alike.
