Belmont is a village in Lafayette County, Wisconsin, with a population of 989 at the 2020 census. Founded in 1835 by land speculator John Atchison, Belmont holds a distinguished place in Wisconsin history as the original capital of the Wisconsin Territory during the first legislative assembly in 1836. The original territorial capitol building is preserved at First Capitol Historic Site, located several miles northwest of the village. The village's name derives from French, meaning "beautiful mountain," a reference to three hills within the community. Belmont covers a total area of 0.88 square miles and sits adjacent to the Town of Belmont. The village is home to Belmont High School as the local educational institution. Just northwest of the village lies Belmont Mound State Park. For many years, U.S. Highway 151 passed directly through Belmont, though the highway was expanded to four lanes in 2004 and subsequently rerouted to the north of the village.
