Bernice, Oklahoma, is a small town in Delaware County that traces its roots back to 1912, when Rose Mode and Charles Lee purchased sixty acres of land in the Horse Creek Basin. Mode named the developing settlement after his daughter, Bernice. A post office was established in February 1913, and the town quickly became a local agricultural hub. By 1918, the population had grown to nearly four hundred, with businesses including a bank, grain elevator, sawmill, hotel, flour mill, and multiple general stores. Like many rural communities, Bernice experienced population decline following World War I and the Great Depression, dropping from 198 residents in 1920 to just ninety-one by 1940. The town's character changed significantly when the Pensacola Dam was constructed, forcing residents to relocate to higher ground to avoid the resulting flood plain.
Today, Bernice has transformed into a vacation and retirement destination. Located on Grand Lake o' the Cherokees along the west bank of Horse Creek, the town proudly claims the title of "Crappie Fishing Capital of the World."
