Agness is an unincorporated community in Curry County, Oregon, situated near the confluence of two Wild and Scenic rivers—the Lower Rogue and the Illinois. The settlement traces its origins to October 16, 1897, when the Agness post office was established. The community received its name from Agnes, the daughter of the first postmaster, though a spelling variation made it Agness. Today, the area remains popular with visitors drawn to its exceptional fishing and hiking opportunities. Nestled within the Rogue River–Siskiyou National Forest, Agness experienced the threat of the Biscuit Fire in 2002. A distinctive feature of the community is its mail boat service, one of only two rural mail boat routes still operating in the United States. This unique service runs along the Rogue River between Gold Beach and Agness. The region boasts several sites of historical significance, including Rogue River Ranch, which appears on the National Register of Historic Places, and Lucas Lodge, both recognized by the Oregon State Historic Preservation Office. The Agness-Illahe Museum welcomes visitors from May through September. Much of Agness's modern economy centers on tourism, with lodges, hotels, restaurants, and camping facilities serving the area. Jet boat tours operated by Jerry's Rogue Jets, carrying up to fifty passengers from Gold Beach, bring visitors to historic sites and resorts throughout the Rogue Valley.
