Wyeville is a village in Monroe County, Wisconsin, situated along Wisconsin Highway 21. With a population of 121 at the 2020 census, this small community has deep roots in the region's railroad history. The village's origins trace to the late nineteenth century when major rail lines expanded through the area. The West Wisconsin Railway, authorized in 1876 to connect St. Paul, Minnesota with Elroy, Wisconsin, became the Chicago, St. Paul, Minneapolis and Omaha Railway in 1880. A branch line was constructed eastward from this location to Necedah, and the junction earned the name "Necedah Junction." When a post office was established in 1890 under postmaster Charles Brooks, it was called Wyeville, a name derived from Wythe County in Virginia. The community eventually adopted the post office name in 1911, dropping "Necedah Junction" from use. The railroad remained central to Wyeville's identity, with a true railroad wye built at the crossing along with an interlocking tower and depot. Until 1963, the village served as a scheduled transfer point where passengers on the Twin Cities 400 and Rochester 400 streamliners changed trains. The Milwaukee, Sparta, and Northwestern Railroad also used the line through Wyeville as part of its route from Adams to Sparta, completed in 1910. Today, Wyeville remains a modest village reflecting its historical importance as a railroad junction.
