Woodbourne is a small hamlet in the town of Fallsburg in Sullivan County, New York. According to the 2020 census, the community is home to 411 residents. Located where New York State Routes 42 and 52 briefly overlap and cross the Neversink River, Woodbourne sits surrounded by several neighboring hamlets including Neversink, Grahamsville, Loch Sheldrake, Old Falls, and Hasbrouck.
The area was first settled by Europeans in the 1780s, many arriving from Ulster County in search of affordable, fertile land. In 1830, Gabriel Ludlum relocated his law practice to the region from nearby Hasbrouck and gave the area its name. The settlement grew through the nineteenth century, benefiting from its proximity to Ellenville, which sat along the Delaware & Hudson Canal. A tannery established by Austin Strong and Medad T. Morss after 1831 contributed to the local economy until it burned down in 1866. The decline of the tanning industry, brought on by the depletion of hemlock forests in Sullivan County, combined with the arrival of the New York, Ontario and Western Railway in the early 1870s, diminished Woodbourne's economic importance.
