Wise is the county seat of Wise County in southwestern Virginia, a town of 2,970 residents according to the 2020 census. Originally incorporated as Gladeville in 1874, the town was renamed Wise in 1924 to honor Henry A. Wise, the last Virginia governor before the Civil War and the first governor to come from Virginia's Eastern Shore.
