Windsor, Vermont holds a distinctive place in American history as the birthplace of the state. Chartered in 1761 by colonial governor Benning Wentworth as one of the New Hampshire grants, the town was first settled in August 1764 by Captain Steele Smith and his family from Connecticut. The community itself was named after Windsor, Connecticut. Windsor's most significant historical moment came in 1777 when the signers of the Constitution of the Vermont Republic met at Old Constitution House, a tavern at the time, to declare independence from Great Britain. This constitutional convention established the Vermont Republic as a sovereign state, which would remain independent until joining the United States in 1791. The town served as Vermont's first capital until 1805, when that honor moved to Montpelier.
Throughout much of its history, Windsor thrived as an industrial and commercial hub. By 1820, it had become the state's largest town, a flourishing center for trade and agriculture. The town's location on the Connecticut River, with smaller streams running into it, fostered commerce. Manufacturing enterprises flourished, particularly after 1835 when the first dam was built across Mill Brook to provide water power. Factories produced guns, machinery, tinware, furniture, and harnesses. In 1846, Robbins and Lawrence received a government contract to manufacture firearms using advanced machine tools. The arrival of the railroad brought further prosperity, connecting Windsor to out-of-state markets and attracting tourists. Today, Windsor remains an important community, with a population of 3,559 at the 2020 census.
