Windham is a village in eastern Portage County, Ohio, with a population of 1,666 at the 2020 census. The community traces its roots to 1811, when sixteen families from Becket, Massachusetts purchased approximately 14,825 acres from Caleb Strong and established a settlement in the Connecticut Western Reserve. These settlers, known as the Beckett Land Company, arrived in May 1811 and held the township's first religious service that July. Originally named Strongsburg after its former owner, the township was renamed Sharon around 1820 and then Windham in honor of Windham, Connecticut, home to some of the original settlers. The Congregational Church built on the village green remains active today as a member of the United Church of Christ.
Windham's modern history was dramatically shaped by World War II. In 1940, the U.S. Department of the Army established the Ravenna Arsenal in eastern Portage County, which eventually employed over 14,000 workers during the war. The government selected Windham as a housing site for arsenal workers, triggering extraordinary growth. The village experienced a population increase of over 1,100 percent during the 1940s, making it the fastest-growing municipality in the entire nation during that decade, a distinction noted in National Geographic magazine in 1951.
