Willis is an unincorporated community nestled in the southeastern corner of Washtenaw County, Michigan, located within Augusta Charter Township about thirteen miles southeast of Ann Arbor. Situated at an elevation of 686 feet, the community centers along Willis Road between Potterville Drive to the east and Bunton Road to the west, with the nearby community of Whittaker a few miles to the southwest.
The area's history began in 1833 when it received its first post office under the name Paint Creek. The community that would become Willis developed just to the east of Paint Creek, originally known as Potter after early settler Willis L. Potter. The transformative moment came in 1880 with the arrival of a Grand Trunk Railway line. After the hamlets of Eaton Mills and Paint Creek competed for the railroad's route, the railroad company chose to split the difference, and Potter donated land for the train station adjacent to Howell's general store, which remains the oldest standing building in Willis and now operates as Bonehead's Restaurant. This railroad arrival sparked significant growth, including the construction of three boarding houses at the corner of Willis and Meridian for railroad workers. Businesses from the surrounding areas gradually migrated to the new village.
The Paint Creek post office was renamed Newcomb in 1881 and finally established as Willis on December 15, 1887, taking its name from Potter's first name. Today, Willis maintains its post office at 8790 Bunton Road, serving the 48191 ZIP Code area. The community is served by Lincoln Consolidated School District, and a single Norfolk Southern Railway line still runs diagonally through the area, though the historic Willis Station no longer operates.
