Williamsport is an incorporated town in Washington County, Maryland, situated 7.69 miles southwest of Hagerstown and 16.23 miles north of Martinsburg, West Virginia. The town spans 1.04 square miles and had a population of 2,083 according to the 2020 census. The area experiences a humid subtropical climate with hot, humid summers and generally mild to cool winters.
The town's history traces back to important colonial times. In the mid-18th century, Williamsport lay along one of the early Native American trails between New York and the Carolinas, a route that tens of thousands of European settlers and pioneer families followed on the Great Wagon Road from Pennsylvania to Virginia and points south and west. In 1744, a ferry was established at the present site of Williamsport to carry this traffic across the Potomac River. The town gained further significance in 1755 when Thomas Cresap's land tract called "Leeds" became an important supply depot for the Braddock expedition to capture the French fort Duquesne at present-day Pittsburgh. Col. Thomas Dunbar's 48th regiment of the British Army encamped here on May 1, 1755, before ferrying across the Potomac River and marching south to rejoin other British forces. Today, travelers make the crossing on Interstate 81 about a mile downriver from the town, a modern echo of the colonial-era ferry traffic that once defined Williamsport's strategic location.
