Willamina is a small city straddling the border between Polk and Yamhill Counties in Oregon's Willamette Valley region. Home to 2,239 residents according to the 2020 census, the city sits near the intersection of Oregon Routes 18, 18 Business, and 22, approximately eighteen miles southwest of McMinnville and adjacent to the South Yamhill River. The Yamhill County portion of Willamina is part of the Portland–Vancouver–Beaverton Metropolitan Statistical Area, while its Polk County portion belongs to the Salem Metropolitan Area.
The city's distinctive name traces back to early pioneer history. Willamina Creek was named for Willamina Williams, an early settler who fell off her horse into the creek. Williams, born Willamina Craig in Ohio in 1817, arrived in Oregon in 1845 with her first husband James Maley and his daughter. After James Maley's death in 1847, Willamina married Enos Williams in 1848 and the couple settled in what is now Amity. A post office was first established in the area in 1855, eventually relocating to the present townsite in 1878. That same year, a gristmill and sawmill were built. The townsite was platted in 1879, and Willamina officially incorporated in 1903 with a population of two hundred residents. Today, the community continues as a rural place where agriculture and local commerce remain central to life in this corner of the Willamette Valley.
